The election of Fr. Fabio Attard as the 11th successor of Don Bosco marks a historic moment for the Salesian Congregation and the Salesian Family worldwide. Elected during the 29th General Chapter of the Society of St. Francis de Sales, Fr. Fabio Attard fully embodies Don Bosco's charism and is preparing to lead the Salesian mission dedicated to young people, especially the poorest and most vulnerable, in 136 nations. With extensive theological, pastoral, and academic experience, Fr. Attard is called to guide the Salesian Congregation toward a renewed future, bringing Don Bosco's dream to the heart of the contemporary world.

A Journey of Faith and Formation

Born on March 23, 1959, in Gozo, Malta, Fr. Fabio Attard grew up in Victoria, where he attended public primary and secondary schools. His vocation began to take shape during his years at the Major Seminary of Gozo (1975-1978). Later, he entered the Salesian aspirantate at Savio College in Dingli, Malta, before preparing for the novitiate in Dublin. On September 8, 1980, he made his religious profession as a Salesian of Don Bosco in Maynooth, Ireland.

Fr. Attard pursued his studies with great dedication, earning a degree in Theology from the Pontifical Salesian University (UPS) and a Licentiate in Moral Theology from the prestigious Accademia Alfonsiana in Rome. Ordained a priest on July 4, 1987, he embarked on a ministry deeply rooted in pastoral care and academic research.

Fr. Fabio Attard has dedicated his life to missionary and educational service, distinguishing himself for his pastoral and academic commitment. After contributing to the foundation of the Salesian presence in Tunisia, he took on leadership roles in Malta, directing Salesian schools and oratories. In 1999, he obtained a doctorate in theology, becoming a professor at the Pontifical Salesian University and guiding the formation of future theologians.

From 2008 to 2020, he served as General Councillor for Youth Ministry, promoting international initiatives for youth education and social inclusion, publishing the Frame of Reference for Salesian Youth Ministry, and representing the Salesians in major global forums. He strengthened pastoral formation, founding an institute in Malta and collaborating with the Vatican as a Consultor for the Dicastery for Laity, Family, and Life.

From 2020 to 2023, he coordinated Salesian Formation in Europe, contributing to the creation of a master's program for Salesians and lay collaborators.

Now, as Rector Major, he will lead the Salesian Congregation with a charismatic vision, continuing Don Bosco's mission in education, evangelization, and social transformation worldwide.

The 29th General Chapter of the Salesian Congregation (GC 29) taking place in Valdocco, Turin (6 February / 12 April 2025) is a time of spirituality, analysis and decisions for the sexennium 2025-2031.
The event involves 269 participants, including 227 Capitulars, and is an opportunity to reflect on the current state of the Congregation and its future.

The central theme, 'Passionate for Jesus Christ, dedicated to the young', calls Salesians to rediscover their consecrated identity in Christ and to renew their commitment to the young.
