Fr. Gustavo Agín re-elected to the leadership of the Betharram Congregation

22/06/2023

Father Gustavo Agín does his encore and will lead the congregation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Betharram for another six years. This was decided by the delegates of the nations gathered at the General Chapter in Chiang Mai, Thailand, who on the first ballot agreed to renew the Argentinean in the role of superior general.

"I am fully aware that there are many people among us who are capable, even more than me, for this task," Father Gustavo Agín told in the chapter hall immediately after his re-election. I know my limits. Many times I have been tempted to leave this cross. But if God asks me, I gladly accept, because it is not a service I do alone. It is a shared service, with the brothers who have carried it with me over these years. I feel your closeness. Thank you for your trust. For the rest, I entrust myself fully to the Lord. Thank you"

A concept that the newly re-elected Superior General also practically expressed with the gesture of washing the feet of twelve religious representing all the Regions and Vicariates of the congregation, in accordance with the ceremonial of the election.

For Father Agín, 61 years of age and 28 years of Mass, this is his second term as Superior General. Accompanying him for the next six years - in what is quite an unusual event - will be practically the same General Council that has accompanied him so far. In fact, the general chapter reconfirmed for a second term Father Jean-Dominique Delgue as general vicar and as bursar and general secretary Father Graziano Sala, for the third consecutive six-year term. Father Stervin Selvadass will also continue his current work as first councillor and formation coordinator. The only new addition to the General Council is Father John Chan Kunu (currently Regional Vicar in Thailand), who replaces Father Tobia Sosio as second councillor and coordinator for missionary cooperation.
