Camaldoli: dom Matteo Ferrari new Prior General

On Monday, 14 November, during the general chapter held in Camaldoli (diocese of Arezzo), Dom Matteo Ferrari was elected prior of Camaldoli and prior general of the Camaldolese Congregation of the Order of Saint Benedict. The monk succeeds Dom Alessandro Barban who governed the monastic Congregation for twelve years.

This branch of the Benedictine Family arose around 980 and had as its founder and promoter of this rule of life Saint Romuald (951-1027), the abbot who founded, among other things, the famous hermitage of Camaldoli in Tuscany.

Born in 1974, Dom Matteo Ferrari has been a monk at Camaldoli since 2001, where he was ordained a priest by the Archbishop of Arezzo-Cortona-San Sepulcro Riccardo Fontana in 2010. An esteemed biblical scholar and liturgy expert, he is the author of numerous publications. Most recently, he was the contact person for the liturgy during the 16th General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops hosted in Rome in October.

In charge of the Tuscan Bishops' Conference (Cet) for culture and communications and professor at the 'Santa Caterina da Siena' Higher Institute of Religious Sciences, of which he is deputy director.
